Preparing GP Devices for the End of Windows 10 Support

On 14 October 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10. This means GP practices across the UK must act now to ensure that all devices and medical equipment are compatible with Windows 11. Without preparation, practices risk system vulnerabilities, potential downtime, and disruption to patient care.

What the end of Windows 10 support means

After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide:

  • Free security updates

  • Non-security updates

  • Assisted support

Any device still running Windows 10 will become increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats and data breaches. For GP practices that store and process sensitive patient information, staying on an unsupported operating system is not an option.

Why Windows 11 compatibility is essential for GP practices

Primary care relies on a wide range of technology, from consultation room computers to diagnostic equipment and administrative systems. If these devices are not compatible with Windows 11, GP practices may face:

  • Disruption to clinical workflows

  • Incompatibility with essential medical software

  • Greater cybersecurity risks

  • Unexpected costs from emergency replacements

Steps GPs should take now

  1. Audit all devices – Review every device in use, including computers, medical equipment and connected systems, to check if they meet Windows 11 requirements.

  2. Consult suppliers– Speak with Primary Care Supplies to confirm whether your existing devices are compatible or if upgrades are required.

  3. Plan upgrades early– Avoid last-minute issues by upgrading or replacing non-compatible devices ahead of the October 2025 deadline.

  4. Check software compatibility– Confirm that practice management systems and diagnostic applications are supported on Windows 11.

  5. Budget effectively– Factor in replacements or upgrades to ensure a smooth and secure transition.

Supporting GP practices with the transition

At Primary Care Supplies, we provide technology and medical devices designed for the needs of modern GP practices. Our team can advise on compatibility with Windows 11 and help identify which equipment is future-proof, ensuring your practice remains secure and compliant.

Take action now

The end of Windows 10 support is approaching quickly. By preparing now, GP practices can safeguard patient data, protect against cyber threats, and avoid disruption to clinical services.

SECA CT330 and CT331 Now Integrates with EMIS Web

The seca CT330 and CT331 will now fully integrate with EMIS Web and SystmOne, saving time on patient data entry and allowing for a paperless service.

Better work quality

With seca integration solutions, patient measurements are saved directly in an electronic medical record (EMR) system; providing you immediate access to accurate patient information. Manual entry of results is eliminated and the measurement process is accelerated, giving you more time to spend with your patients.

Prevent transcription errors

Erroneous measurement results put patients at risk. Even the smallest variances are critical if, for example, medication dosages are incorrect because they are based on an overstated weight. When a seca integration solution is used, all measurements are automatically stored in an EMR system. Nursing staff are then free to concentrate on the measuring process and potential errors with handwritten notes are prevented.

Better workflow-management

Quite often patient data is required by different medical specialties. Such information can be vital, particularly in the case of surgery. When all relevant measurements are stored directly in an EMR system, they are immediately available to users everywhere. Thus, allowing preparations to be optimised and accelerated, while improving clinical decision-making and workflow efficiency.

Note: EMIS Web integration carries an annual charge of £150 + VAT, which is invoiced directly from SECA

Choosing the right Welch Allyn diagnostic set

If you are searching for the perfect diagnostic set, you will no doubt have discovered there is literally thousands to choose from, available from a variety of leading brands or not so good brands. You can spend lots of money on one. You can also save money by finding the right set, at the right price without compromising on quality.

Or you have the option to buy a really good diagnostic set, at a very good price and be assured that the quality is second to none. And this is where Welch Allyn come in.

LED bulbs last longer and they eat up less power

Nowadays diagnostic sets, like everything else that has a light bulb, is generally moving towards LED technology. This is perfect because LED bulbs last longer and they eat up less power. Therefore our first advice is to look towards getting a set that has LED bulbs. Tip number 2: A lot of diagnostic sets are either battery powered or have the option to come with a rechargeable battery and charger. As mentioned above, LED bulbs eat up less power so you are not changing batteries as frequently – so consider this when you buy your set – is a rechargeable set really needed?

The Welch Allyn LED pocket diagnostic sets that we have available are fantastic. Not only are they cost effective, they tick every box when it comes to using an Otoscope or Opthalmoscope for everyday general examination. GP’s and nurses love them. The bulbs have a 7 year warranty and the optics are superb.

The sets are available in 4 colors and come as a “pocket LED set” or “pocket LED plus set” – Both slightly different in terms of what you get included.

Flu and possible COVID vaccination: Does your practice have the capacity?

With the annual flu season now in full swing, it has never been so important for certain patient groups to be administered the flu vaccination. With the Coronvirus pandemic entering its second wave, this undoubtably will be a very busy flu season for practices across the nation.

As we get ever closer in developing a COVID-19 vaccine, practice managers will no doubt be thinking ahead about storage capacity. The Government have already reserved 90 million doses of two COVID-19 vaccine candidates that should they prove safe and effective could be rolled out as early as the first quarter of 2021.  In addition, the government recently announced new measures to support the roll-out of vaccines with more healthcare works being trained, in particular individuals that currently work outside NHS settings.

Now is a good time to start thinking ahead for your practice. Does your practice have the capacity to store flu and COVID vaccinations at the same time?

Here at Primary Care Supplies we partner with LABCOLD where we have great offers to help GP practices get prepared as we get closer to developing a safe vaccination for COVID.
